Provider Leaders
Lead the care you want to see.
- Train before they work aloneNew staff work alone only after their required training and supervised shifts are complete and documented. Being short-staffed is never a reason to skip it. Follow your state's and program's training rules, and keep proof of what each person completed. Episode 1: The First Week
- Check before they startComplete every required check before a new employee works: background checks, references, licenses and any registry checks your state requires. Offer the job if you like, but schedule them only after everything is back and filed. Episode 2: Hire Right
- Supervise for realSupervision means observing staff at work, giving feedback and documenting what really happened. Never record a visit or observation that didn't take place. Plan regular visits and follow your program's supervision requirements. Episode 3: Who's Supervising?
- Look for patternsLeaders review incident reports together to spot patterns, like the same time, place or task. Fix the cause, such as staffing or routines, instead of only blaming one person. Write down what you changed and check that it worked. Episode 4: The Incident Review
- Protect people who speak upMake it safe for staff to report concerns. Thank them, look into it properly, protect their privacy where you can, and never punish anyone for an honest report. Retaliation is wrong, and in many cases it's against the law. Episode 5: Don't Shoot the Messenger
- Don't run staff into the groundToo many double shifts lead to exhaustion and mistakes. Follow your rules on hours, use a backup or on-call plan, and fix the real problem by hiring and scheduling fairly. Listen when staff say they're too tired to work safely. Episode 6: Short-Staffed
- Be honest before the surveyBefore an inspection, check your records and complete what's genuinely due. Never back-fill or invent records. If you find gaps, fix the cause and write a correction plan you can show the surveyor. Honest records build trust. Episode 7: Ready for the Survey
- Keep your good peopleStaff stay where they feel respected: steady schedules, fair pay, clear training and real recognition. Ask staff what would help before they quit, act on what you hear, and thank them for good work. Steady staff mean better care. Episode 8: Why They Leave
- Train on every changeA written policy only works when staff know it. When a policy changes, train everyone who's affected, answer their questions, and keep a record of who was trained and when. Check that the new way is really being used. Episode 9: Policy on Paper
- Lead the way you want staff to actStaff follow what leaders do, not just what they say. Own your mistakes openly, fix them, and follow the same rules you expect staff to follow. Honest leaders build teams where problems are reported early and fixed. Episode 10: Lead by Example
